Leading Worship From the Perfect Love of Jesus
I don’t know about you, but the weight and responsibility of leading worship every week is so real!
When we think about what it takes to step up on that platform and sing, love and lead the people in front of us, it requires something from us every single time.
I have been thinking lately about the implications of the song, “The Perfect Love of Jesus” and it has caused me to consider what the implications could be for us as worship leaders.
Sometimes we lead and sing as though we are trying to obtain the love of Jesus; leading FOR his love and acceptance.
But what would happen if we led worship FROM a place that acknowledged and believed the truth that this song proclaims? What would be different in our worship leading?
Here are two realities that come from leading FROM the perfect love of Jesus:
#1 No person or leader is elevated at the foot of the cross.
Jesus has saved me and you from the weight of sin, the same way he has saved everyone else. Forgiveness, acceptance and salvation are things that we cannot earn and do not deserve.
Let’s be leaders who lead and sing from a place of gratitude for the undeserved love and grace we have received rather than presenting ourselves as though we are elevated, better than or more important than anyone else. When we lead with that kind of humility, we elevate Jesus to his rightful place and join with everyone in the room to sing his praise.
#2 Perfection in his presence is found in His love, not in our efforts.
We can get so caught up and focused on musical excellence when we lead. We evaluate the effectiveness of a worship set, or a song based on it. But the power is not in our efforts and attempts to sing, play or lead perfectly. The power is in the love of Jesus that is constant, regardless of what our human efforts look like. His love is perfect. It’s unconditional. And it’s not tied to how well we do or don’t do.
When we lead from the love of Jesus, we are free from striving. We can focus on being present rather than trying to be perfect.
As we step into a place of leading this next week, let’s lead FROM the perfect love of Jesus where we live and lead in a way that acknowledges that Jesus is the foundation of our strength and security.
God has placed you where you are for a reason – and we each have an opportunity to lead and love the people around us.
