In a culture moving at a breakneck pace, it’s easy to view God’s presence as something we must manufacture or chase down on a Sunday morning.

But over the past couple of years, God has been re-anchoring my heart in a fundamental truth: His presence isn't an event we attend—it’s a reality we inhabit.

This song started as a raw voice memo sent to my co-writer and fellow artist, Jake MacAdam. We set out with a simple desire: to articulate what it actually feels like to sit in the presence of Jesus.

That desire was born out of a season of deep grief, severe emotional pain, and PTSD.

During that time, my counselor gave me a transformative piece of advice to help navigate intense triggers:

Create a chapel in your mind to meet with Jesus, and go there often.

Whenever those moments hit, I was encouraged to step into that quiet refuge and bring Him my trauma without pretending to be okay. The beauty of this was that I could meet Jesus in this way anytime and anywhere. I didn't need to wear a mask, perform, or hide my pain. I just needed to sit at His feet.

Meeting Jesus in that space taught me that sacred ground isn't tied to a specific place or circumstance.

Whether standing in a packed sanctuary, sitting in a quiet hospital room, or walking through a valley of heartbreak, the ground beneath your feet becomes holy simply because Jesus is there with you.

Scripturally, the song draws on Moses’ encounter at the burning bush (Exodus 3:5), where God revealed that even ordinary dirt becomes holy in His presence. We paired that awe with the intimate comfort of Psalm 139:

"Where can I go from your Spirit?... if I make my bed in the depths, you are there." That assurance inspired lines like "We won't fear the storm / You are King over the flood" (Psalm 29:10)—a direct response to knowing that no matter how deep the trial, He holds us fast.

When we sing the bridge—"All our joy, all our peace, we find here at Your feet / You are more than enough"—it’s an invitation into complete rest.

It's a reminder that He is present, active, and closer than our next breath.

My prayer for “Holy Ground” is that it gives broken hearts permission to come exactly as they are. May it remind every weary soul that wherever Jesus meets us, we are safe, secure, and surrounded by His love.
