I dont know why he chose me… but Im glad he did.”

I was listening to England International footballer Ian Wright being interviewed on the BBC.  By the end of it, he was in bits.

He was talking about his teacher, Mr. Pigden, who had stepped into his life — taught him to write, trusted him with responsibility and held him to a higher standard. The former WW2 spitfire pilot was a father figure and hero to him, when his natural father was completely missing from his life.

I dont know why he chose me… but Im glad he did. He was more proud of me playing for England, than of him flying over Buckingham palace in a Spitfire after the war…..I loved that man so much”

That line really stayed with me. Because, if you’re a Christian, that’s our story too: adopted by a father, saved by a hero. But it was all past tense. It needed something more.

What was missing?

The Realisation

I found myself drawn back to the words of 2 Corinthians 13:14. It’s a benediction most of us have heard countless times. Maybe I’ve even stopped noticing how personal it is?

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
And the love of God,
And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
Be with us all, evermore.”

We have a Father, we have a hero, what we also have is our ongoing relationship with the Holy Spirit, and with each other through Him.  Nothing abstract— real relationships. Our creator is at heart relational, close.  Isn’t that fantastic?!

What saddened me about Wright’s story… was that he had lost touch with his hero, thinking he was dead, not realising he was still alive.  But our story is different, our God sticks with us, closer than a brother. I didn’t sit down to “write a benediction song.” I just wanted our church to remember that unwavering closeness as well.

Why It Felt Natural in Our Church

The melody came pretty instinctively, I love drawing from familiar folk music, even in contemporary worship. It means songs don’t feel like something new we have to learn — more like something we already know.

Something you could sing around a fire on a beach in the west of Ireland, just as easily as at the end of a Sunday service. That sense of familiarity helped the congregation sing it straight away.

The song has lasted, and it keeps evolving as new worship leaders and congregations bring their own voice to it.

Does it work?

Here’s the chorus. It’s pretty emphatic!

Love from the Father, and Grace from the Son,
Joined by the Spirit, eternal Three in One,
For you’ve made me your child and that Cannot be undone,
Thats the power, that’s the grace, of the gospel.

The verses unpack our relationship with the triune God, exploring the Christian benediction we regularly say together from 2 Corinthians 13:14.  It’s probably as faithful a telling of that story as you’ll find.

If you’re looking for something Scripture-rooted, upbeat and encouraging as a closing / sending / benediction, and easy for your church to pick up, you might find this serves that final moment well.
