It Is Well: A Song of Defiant Faith in the Middle of Loss

My latest single, “It Is Well,” was inspired by one of the most powerful hymns in church history. I’ve always loved “It Is Well with My Soul,” written by Horatio Spafford after devastating loss—his son had died, his business was ruined in the Chicago fire, and later his four daughters were killed in a shipwreck while his wife survived. In the face of unimaginable grief, he was still able to say, because of Jesus, “It is well with my soul.” That kind of faith in the heart of crisis has always marked me.

This past year, that message became deeply personal.

I’ve been walking through the slow grief of losing my mom to advanced dementia. She is still alive, but her condition has progressed to the point where she no longer recognizes family and now lives in a care facility. It’s a different kind of loss—long, disorienting, and heavy. In many ways, it feels like saying goodbye in slow motion.

“It Is Well” was born in that tension.

The chorus and bridge actually started with my friends Jonathan Smith and Brandon Lake. They shared the idea with me, and we ended up reworking some of those sections and writing the verses together. That’s often how songs come to life in our songwriting community—ideas get passed around, shaped, refined, and carried forward by different voices. I’m genuinely grateful to be part of this one. I love how it turned out.

I didn’t want to write a lament. Instead, I felt compelled to write something resolute. The song is upbeat and declarative. It doesn’t deny that storms come or that sorrows roll, just like the old hymn says. It acknowledges that suffering is real. But it takes an intentional stance: we are not defined by our circumstances.

Our peace, our joy, and our security are not anchored to what’s happening around us. They are anchored to Jesus.

Scripture talks about a peace that passes understanding. That peace doesn’t come from stable conditions; it comes from the unchanging nature of Christ. Because of Him—because of His finished work, His faithfulness, and His promises—we can say with theological certainty that no matter what we face, it is well with our soul.

In this season, this song has become both my confession and my declaration. Storms come. Sorrow comes. But Jesus remains steady. And because He remains steady, it is well.

My hope for this song is that when people hear it, they would embrace that same truth for themselves. Whatever comes—loss, uncertainty, heartbreak, change—they would know they are not defined by those circumstances. Their peace is not fragile. Their joy is not circumstantial. Their security is rooted in Jesus. And because of Him, no matter what they walk through, they can say with confidence: it is well with my soul.
